A Persian miniature in the Timurid-Safavid tradition, depicting a polo match (chowgan) on a royal playing field. The image is painted on fine cream wasli paper in opaque gouache. The composition is entirely flat — no horizon, no cast shadows, the ground treated as a single plane of bright malachite green scattered with individual stylised flowers (tulip, rose, iris). Mounted players in patterned silk khalat robes swing long-handled polo mallets; their horses are shown in flying gallop with legs fully extended in the Persianate convention. One player's turban has come loose and streams behind him. The polo ball is a small gold circle on the grass. The court is bounded by pavilion arches at the top with spectators in tiered silk robes watching. The border is a broad rectangular cartouche of dense interlaced arabesque vine work in gold and lapis on a midnight blue ground. Palette: lapis blue, malachite green, gold, scarlet, ivory, and coral.
