Heian Court Garden by Moonlight

A scene from a Heian-period emaki horizontal narrative scroll, painted in the yamato-e style: opaque mineral pigments on thick kozo paper, birds-eye viewpoint with roofs removed to reveal interior. The setting is an aristocratic garden by moonlight: a round full moon reflected in a still garden pond fringed with irises and weathered stone lanterns. On a wide wooden veranda, a noblewoman (nyobou) in twelve-layer juni-hitoe robes of autumn-gradient silk — deep crimson at top, fading through russet and gold to pale cream at hem — gazes at the moon while holding a poem slip. Her hair flows unbound to the floor in the classical style. Attendants in simpler layered robes arrange a lacquered go board and a koto instrument nearby. The color palette achieves the Heian ideal of kasane-no-irome color layering: muted jewel tones of grape, moss, gold, and grey. The composition is flat, with no cast shadows, characteristic of yamato-e.
