Renaissance Illuminated Map with Sea Monsters

A Renaissance-era illuminated cartographic manuscript page in the tradition of 15th-century Portuguese and Flemish mapmakers. The map depicts the known world in a roughly oval Ptolemaic projection, painted on parchment with opaque gouache and gold leaf. Coastlines are drawn in fine black ink; seas filled with Flemish cobalt blue. The Atlantic Ocean is populated with two magnificent sea monsters — a coiled serpentine leviathan with ribbed scales and a wide fin, and a whale-like beast spouting water — both painted in deep green, crimson, and gold with fine scale detail. Wind heads (cherub faces blowing air) occupy the four corners, each within a compass-rose cartouche. Ship silhouettes with billowing sails in ochre and white are scattered across the ocean. The map border carries ornamental strapwork interlace in gold and red. The vellum shows authentic foxing and small wormholes. In the center of the map, a gilded cartouche contains decorative italic lettering.
